The controversy surrounding rapper Macklemore’s removal from Ed Sheeran’s stadium tour has taken another turn as British band Gorillaz appeared to address the matter directly during a performance in Florida last week.
During Thursday’s concert, Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn held up a Palestinian flag and draped it over his shoulder while delivering a pointed message to the audience. “Don’t forget this. Ever. Stand your position. Don’t ever be neutral,” Albarn told concertgoers.
The display came in the wake of Macklemore’s removal from Sheeran’s tour after the rapper repeatedly shouted “Free Palestine” at performances and performed his anti-Israel song “Hind’s Hall.” That decision prompted criticism from several progressive figures, though representatives for Sheeran have maintained he was not personally involved in removing Macklemore from the lineup.
This marks the latest instance of Gorillaz using their platform to promote anti-Israel causes since the October 7 terror attacks. The band performed at the Together for Palestine concert in 2025, which benefited Palestinian organizations. During the Glastonbury Festival in 2024, Albarn directly asked the audience about their stance on the conflict, inquiring whether they supported Palestine and considered the war unfair.
Macklemore has stood by his activism despite the consequences. In a lengthy statement, the rapper acknowledged the situation while maintaining perspective on his position. “I am not a victim. Ed Sheeran is not a victim. Pink is not a victim. We have careers, money, opportunities, safety and audiences around the world,” Macklemore wrote. “Whatever consequences any of us face for what we say, we get to go home to our families.”
Sheeran addressed the matter during his Saturday night performance, attempting to clarify his position on the broader controversy. The singer explained that he has deliberately avoided becoming what he termed “a political commentator” throughout his career, stating his desire for his music and shows to promote unity rather than division.
The situation has placed Sheeran in an uncomfortable position, caught between his stated preference for remaining apolitical and the increasingly vocal activism of other artists in the music industry. Representatives for both Gorillaz and Sheeran were contacted for comment but did not immediately respond.
