A Mexican national who illegally entered the United States has been indicted on federal firearms charges after allegedly shooting a Dallas school police officer with the officer’s own service weapon this past summer.
Jose Santiago Pantoja-Morales, age 27, was indicted by a federal grand jury on September 16th on charges of possession of a firearm by an illegal alien, according to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Texas. The incident occurred on August 6th near the Lyndon B. Johnson Freeway in Dallas.
According to the federal complaint, the sequence of events began when Pantoja-Morales jumped from a co-worker’s vehicle into the center median of the freeway. The co-worker flagged down a uniformed Dallas Independent School District police officer who was conducting routine patrol in the area. The officer, acting in good faith, offered Pantoja-Morales transportation to a safe location away from the dangerous roadway.
What happened next represents a stark betrayal of that good Samaritan effort. During the ride, prosecutors state that Pantoja-Morales began searching through the officer’s bag in the back seat of the patrol vehicle. When the officer pulled over and attempted to remove Pantoja-Morales from the car, the suspect resisted, leading to a physical altercation.
During the struggle, Pantoja-Morales allegedly seized the officer’s firearm and discharged it once. The single round struck the officer in the femoral artery of his right leg, a critical injury that could have proven fatal. Despite sustaining this serious wound, the officer managed to regain control of his weapon. Pantoja-Morales fled the scene but was apprehended shortly thereafter by responding law enforcement personnel.
Another Dallas Independent School District officer administered emergency medical treatment at the scene before the wounded officer was transported to Parkland Hospital for additional care. The officer’s swift action in regaining control of his firearm and the rapid medical response likely prevented a more tragic outcome.
United States Attorney Ryan Raybould issued a statement following the indictment that underscored the gravity of the offense. “The illegal alien’s alleged actions in this case represent an attack on the rule of law and a direct threat to public safety,” Raybould said. “Every day, we ask the men and women who wear the badge to stand between good and evil.”
