Federal investigators disclosed Tuesday that a critical component of the private jet that crashed into a Florida neighborhood Sunday was discovered several miles from the impact site, providing evidence that the aircraft began disintegrating mid-flight before claiming the lives of all nine people aboard.

National Transportation Safety Board member Tom Chapman revealed during a news conference that most of the jet’s left elevator, a movable section of the tail assembly that controls the aircraft’s pitch, was recovered between 1.3 and 3.8 miles from where the Learjet 60 struck the ground in Greenacres, Florida.

The discovery marks a significant development in the investigation, though Chapman cautioned that the component’s detachment likely would not have enabled the crew to recover the aircraft given the extreme velocity of its descent. The revelation underscores the catastrophic nature of the mechanical failure that befell the jet as it traveled from Austin, Texas, to North Eleuthera in the Bahamas with seven passengers and two crew members.

Chapman addressed questions regarding the crash’s proximity to President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence, located less than ten miles from the impact site. He unequivocally dismissed any connection to Secret Service operations, stating there is no evidence linking the two and characterizing the geographic coincidence as purely incidental.

Investigators are now preparing to drain the substantial crater left by the crash, where they anticipate recovering additional aircraft fragments. Chapman noted that given the tremendous force of impact, components buried at the site will likely be reduced to small pieces. Recovery efforts have been complicated by severe weather conditions in the area.

The investigation has revealed troubling details about the jet’s final moments. The flight crew had reported encountering light clear ice and moderate turbulence while cruising at approximately 35,000 feet. They subsequently requested permission to climb to 37,000 feet, which air traffic controllers approved. Less than thirty seconds after receiving clearance, the crew reported they were descending and issued a mayday distress call.

Officials have obtained dashboard camera footage that may prove instrumental in reconstructing the aircraft’s final moments before impact. All recovered wreckage is being preserved for thorough analysis. Authorities have urged members of the public who may encounter debris to leave it undisturbed and immediately notify investigators.

Weather conditions remain a primary focus of the ongoing investigation. The combination of icing conditions and turbulence reported by the crew, along with the subsequent structural failure, suggests a complex chain of events that led to the tragedy.

The cause of the crash has not yet been determined. The investigation continues as federal authorities work methodically to piece together evidence from the scattered wreckage and flight data to understand what caused this aircraft to fail so catastrophically.

The loss of all nine lives aboard represents one of the more significant private aviation disasters in recent Florida history, and investigators have pledged a comprehensive examination of all factors that may have contributed to this tragedy.
