A correspondent who nearly lost his life while reporting from Ukraine is preparing to climb more than 2,000 steps to the top of One World Trade Center, and he will make the journey alongside the military surgeon who performed the life-saving operation that kept him alive.
Benjamin Hall, who sustained critical injuries while covering the conflict in Ukraine, announced his participation in the tenth annual Tunnel to Towers Tower Climb scheduled for Sunday. The event raises funds for Gold Star families and the families of fallen first responders.
What makes this climb particularly remarkable is that Hall will ascend all 104 stories on prosthetic legs, a testament to both the severity of his injuries and his determination to overcome them.
“If I have to crawl to get to the very top, I will crawl to get to the top because we need to show that we’re there alongside all these people,” Hall stated during a recent interview.
Joining Hall in this endeavor is Dr. Joe Aldrete, a military trauma surgeon who performed the emergency surgery that saved Hall’s life following his injuries in Ukraine. Dr. Aldrete has spoken publicly about Hall’s remarkable resilience throughout his recovery, emphasizing the critical role that hope and community support play in helping wounded veterans and their families navigate difficult circumstances.
The Tunnel to Towers Foundation has become a significant force in supporting America’s military families and first responders. The annual tower climb at One World Trade Center serves as both a fundraising event and a powerful symbol of perseverance in the face of adversity.
Hall’s decision to participate in this physically demanding event carries a message that extends beyond the climb itself. By undertaking this challenge on prosthetic legs, he aims to demonstrate to others facing their own difficult circumstances that recovery and achievement remain possible, regardless of the obstacles they face.
The partnership between Hall and Dr. Aldrete for this climb represents more than a personal milestone. It embodies the bond between those who serve in dangerous circumstances and the medical professionals who stand ready to save lives when tragedy strikes. Their joint participation underscores the foundation’s mission of supporting those who have sacrificed for their country.
Gold Star families, who have lost loved ones in military service, will be among the primary beneficiaries of funds raised through Sunday’s climb. The Tunnel to Towers Foundation has made supporting these families a cornerstone of its charitable work, recognizing the profound sacrifice made by those who give their lives in service to the nation.
As Hall prepares for Sunday’s climb, his journey from a hospital bed in Ukraine to the base of One World Trade Center stands as a testament to human resilience and the power of expert medical care combined with unwavering determination.
