A tragic case out of Baltimore has resulted in serious charges against two young parents following the death of their infant daughter, who suffered catastrophic injuries that medical professionals have deemed deeply suspicious.
Oscar Pineda and Katerin Monzon-Alvarado, both 21 years of age, have been arrested and charged with first and second-degree child abuse, first and second-degree assault, and reckless endangerment in connection with the death of their two-month-old daughter, Aida Mikea Monzon Alvarado. Baltimore Police have indicated that additional homicide charges may be forthcoming pending the completion of the autopsy report.
The charges carry a maximum possible sentence of 55 years in prison.
According to charging documents, the infant was brought to Harbor Hospital on Wednesday after becoming unresponsive. The mother initially told police that the baby had stopped responding while lying face down in their bed following a feeding. She later claimed the child was “freezing and in shock” when she transported her to the hospital.
Medical examination revealed what prosecutors have described as profoundly disturbing injuries. Doctors noted suspicious severe bruising around the infant’s eyes and jawline during the initial examination. Further assessment uncovered significant head and brain trauma, including multiple skull fractures, frontal lobe hemorrhaging, and subdural hemorrhaging. Despite medical intervention, hospital staff were unable to revive the child, and she was pronounced dead.
The explanations offered by the parents have raised considerable alarm among investigators and prosecutors alike. According to charging documents, the father allegedly told police that his daughter’s injuries resulted from “a supernatural force or Satan slamming a door on the child.” The mother, meanwhile, suggested that the couple’s two-year-old son frequently jumps on the bed, which may have caused the infant to fall to the floor.
At a court hearing on Friday, prosecutors argued forcefully that the severity and extent of the infant’s injuries could not possibly have resulted from a single fall from a bed. The nature of the trauma, including multiple skull fractures and extensive brain damage, suggests a far more violent cause.
