A New York City Police Department detective who suffered multiple stab wounds during an attempted robbery last week walked out of the hospital Monday on his own two feet, demonstrating the resilience that has long characterized the city’s finest.

Detective Jose Mercedes departed Jacobi Medical Center in Morris Park before a gathering of hundreds of his fellow officers, who applauded as he rose from his wheelchair to stand independently. The moment marked a significant milestone in his recovery from a violent attack that occurred Friday afternoon in the Norwood neighborhood of the Bronx.

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch acknowledged the detective’s determination in recovering from his injuries. The entire department, she stated, stands behind Detective Mercedes as he continues his rehabilitation. She further emphasized that the department’s investigators will pursue those responsible for this crime with unwavering commitment.

The attack occurred while Detective Mercedes was off-duty, clearing items from the trunk of his vehicle. Two suspects riding an e-bike approached and attempted to steal his gold chain. When the detective resisted, a violent confrontation ensued. During the struggle, Mercedes sustained seven stab and slash wounds before the assailants fled the scene.

Despite suffering serious injuries, the detective pursued his attackers on foot for approximately two blocks. He ultimately collapsed near the intersection of East 206th Street and Rochambeau Avenue, where emergency responders located him and transported him to Jacobi Medical Center.

The two attackers remain at large. Authorities continue their investigation into the incident, which represents yet another example of the dangers law enforcement officers face, even when off-duty.

This attack comes amid ongoing concerns about street crime in New York City, particularly crimes involving e-bikes, which have become increasingly common in recent months. The vehicles provide criminals with a swift means of approach and escape, complicating efforts by both victims and law enforcement to respond effectively.

Commissioner Tisch and city officials visited Detective Mercedes in the hospital shortly after the attack, underscoring the seriousness with which the department views assaults on its officers.

The detective’s recovery and ability to walk out of the hospital less than a week after sustaining such severe injuries speaks to both modern medical care and the determination of those who serve in law enforcement. As Detective Mercedes continues his recuperation, the investigation into his attackers proceeds with the full resources of the NYPD behind it.

The incident serves as a reminder of the constant vigilance required of police officers and the risks they face in protecting themselves and others, regardless of whether they are on or off duty.
