Federal investigators are examining whether military GPS jamming exercises pose an unacceptable risk to civilian aviation following a fatal air ambulance crash in New Mexico that killed four crew members.

The National Transportation Safety Board’s preliminary report reveals that on May 14, a Beech King Air air ambulance departed Roswell, New Mexico, shortly before midnight on a routine medical transport flight to Ruidoso. Within minutes of takeoff, the crew reported losing GPS navigation capability while the United States military conducted a scheduled GPS-denial exercise at White Sands Missile Range.

The Federal Aviation Administration had issued a notice to airmen before the flight, warning that the military exercise could disrupt satellite navigation across a radius of hundreds of miles. Despite this warning, the aircraft proceeded with its mission.

Air traffic controllers, recognizing the severity of the situation, requested twice that military officials suspend the jamming exercise while assisting the troubled flight. Three other aircraft in the area also reported GPS outages during the same period. The military complied with these requests, at least temporarily.

The crew later reported the airport in sight and requested a visual approach to land. After the military resumed its exercise, the aircraft began its descent toward the runway but struck the Capitan Mountains instead, killing both pilots and two flight nurses aboard.

Federal investigators have not yet determined whether the GPS interference directly caused or contributed to the crash. The investigation remains ongoing.

The incident has drawn attention from aviation safety experts, including Todd Humphreys, a GPS specialist at the University of Texas, who argues the crash raises fundamental questions about outdated cockpit GPS technology and whether the aviation industry has adequately prepared for an era of electronic warfare.

The timing of this tragedy is particularly concerning given the growing prevalence of GPS interference worldwide. Aviation authorities across the globe have issued increasingly urgent warnings that GPS jamming and spoofing represent a mounting operational hazard to civilian aircraft.

The Federal Aviation Administration now advises pilots to be prepared to fly without GPS navigation, acknowledging that intentional jamming has become “of greater and growing concern.” The United Nations’ International Civil Aviation Organization has similarly warned that GPS interference can affect aircraft operations far beyond active conflict zones.

This represents a significant shift in aviation safety planning. For decades, the industry has moved toward greater reliance on satellite navigation systems, which offer precision and efficiency that older ground-based navigation aids cannot match. However, the vulnerability of these systems to deliberate interference was not adequately anticipated.

The question now facing military planners and aviation regulators is whether scheduled GPS jamming exercises near civilian flight corridors represent an acceptable risk. The military requires realistic training for electronic warfare scenarios, yet civilian aviation increasingly depends on the very systems these exercises are designed to disrupt.

As federal investigators continue their work, the aviation community awaits answers about what went wrong that night over New Mexico and whether current protocols adequately protect civilian aircraft during military training operations. The lives of four dedicated medical professionals may depend on getting those answers right.
