In a significant development from our nation’s capital today, Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Kash Patel has announced the termination of all ties with the Southern Poverty Law Center, commonly known as the SPLC. This decision marks a dramatic shift in the relationship between federal law enforcement and the civil rights organization founded in 1971.
Director Patel announced official channels, stating, “The Southern Poverty Law Center long ago abandoned civil rights work and turned into a partisan smear machine. Their so-called ‘hate map’ has been used to defame mainstream Americans and even inspired violence. That disgraceful record makes them unfit for any FBI partnership.”
The timing of this announcement bears particular significance, coming less than one month after the tragic assassination of Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, who was fatally shot while speaking at Utah Valley University on September 10th. Kirk, who was just 31 years old, left behind two children.
Of particular note is the SPLC’s May report, which had listed Turning Point USA in its “hate and extremism” compilation. The organization characterized TPUSA as a “hard-right organization with links to Southern Poverty Law Center-identified hard-right extremists.” The report went further, claiming that Turning Point USA’s primary strategy involved – and again I quote – “sowing and exploiting fear that white Christian supremacy is under attack by nefarious actors.”
Speaking at the FBI’s Anti-Christian Bias Panel in April, Director Patel had already signaled this shift, declaring that the bureau would “never rely on politicized or agenda-driven intelligence from outside groups—and certainly not from the SPLC.”
Andrew Kolvet, speaking as TPUSA’s spokesman, has drawn attention to Kirk’s previous statements regarding the SPLC. In a February 2023 social media post, Kirk had characterized the SPLC itself as a hate group. Kolvet has since argued that both the SPLC and similar organizations are “part of an ecosystem leveraged by radical left vigilantes to dehumanize conservatives and stoke political violence.”

The Southern Poverty Law Center, which began its work as a civil rights legal advocacy group, has faced mounting criticism in recent years. Critics contend that the organization has shifted from its original mission to become increasingly partisan, targeting conservative and faith-based organizations alongside groups traditionally recognized as promoting hate.
This development represents a significant realignment in the relationship between federal law enforcement and civil rights organizations that have historically guided extremist activities.
