Two students, named Kelsie Martin and Hallie Helms, both aged 22, tragically lost their lives on Monday at a residence hall at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. According to reliable sources, this was an isolated incident,” states the university officials.

“A distress call was received by emergency services just before 4 p.m. on Monday, alerting them of an incident at Wilgus Hall, a residence hall on campus,” recounts Joe Hallman, chief of police with UW-Platteville Police Department. He further informs that the situation was quickly evaluated and found to be not an active threat. Emergency personnel responded promptly, leading to at least one individual being transported to the hospital.

Hallman said., “The university took immediate action to ensure the safety of its students. A ‘shelter in place’ order was implemented, which was lifted after 5 p.m.. The university’s policy disallows residents from keeping weapons in their halls, but they can be stored at the police department for certain activities.”

The investigation into the incident remains active and ongoing. The significance of this should not be overlooked. “The details regarding the involvement of weapons in the incident were not divulged at this stage of the investigation,” Chief Hallman further stated.

To understand the full impact of this tragedy, it’s important to note that final exams have been suspended for the week. The university is offering counseling services and an emotional support line to students affected by the incident. This raises important questions about the measures in place to ensure the safety of our students, Chancellor Tammy Evetovich said in a press conference on Monday.
