A Texas mother faces capital murder charges following the shooting deaths of her two sons early Thursday morning in what authorities are describing as a family tragedy that has shaken a quiet community south of Dallas.
Colleen Nichole Lemmon, 42, was taken into custody and charged with two counts of capital murder by the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office after deputies responded to an emergency call shortly before 4:15 a.m. at a residence on Big Sky Drive in Waxahachie.
Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered two male victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Christopher Scott Pitre, 21, was pronounced dead at the scene. His 15-year-old brother, whose name has not been released due to his age, was transported to a local hospital in critical condition but succumbed to his injuries.
According to an arrest affidavit, deputies found Lemmon at the scene with what appeared to be self-inflicted lacerations on her wrists. She was covered in blood, and a handgun was discovered nearby. The suspect allegedly told responding officers, “I shot both my kids.”
Lemmon was suffering from non-life-threatening injuries and was arrested before being transported to a medical facility for treatment. Evidence gathered during the preliminary investigation provided law enforcement with probable cause to charge her with the deaths of both children.
The boys’ father, Scott Pitre, confirmed that his younger son had recently celebrated his 15th birthday. Speaking to investigators, he expressed his desire for justice in the deaths of his children.
Ellis County Sheriff Brad Norman addressed the incident in a public statement, offering condolences to those affected by the tragedy. “My deepest sympathies go out to the victims’ father, family members, and loved ones involved in this tragic incident,” Norman said. “They will remain in our prayers during this difficult time.”
The case has drawn attention from neighbors and community members who are struggling to comprehend the violence that unfolded in their midst. Ida Brown, a resident of the area, described her reaction as one of profound sorrow. “It’s heartbreaking, and I’m praying for them,” she said.
This incident occurs against a backdrop of several high-profile cases involving mothers accused of harming their children. The tragedy in Waxahachie follows ongoing legal proceedings in Massachusetts involving Lindsay Clancy, who stands accused of murdering her three children, a case that recently ended in a mistrial.
The investigation into the Waxahachie shootings remains active as authorities work to piece together the circumstances that led to this devastating outcome. Capital murder charges in Texas carry the possibility of the death penalty or life imprisonment without parole upon conviction.
The Ellis County Sheriff’s Office has not released additional details regarding potential motives or whether there were any warning signs prior to the incident. The community continues to grapple with the loss of two young lives and the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
