Vice President JD Vance addressed reporters in Minneapolis on Thursday to correct a widely circulated but inaccurate account of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement operation in Minnesota this week.

The facts, as they have now been established, tell a considerably different story than the one that spread across social media and through various news outlets in recent days.

The incident in question occurred on January 20, when ICE agents conducted a targeted operation to apprehend Adrian Alexander Conejo Arias, an illegal alien from Ecuador who had been released into the United States during the previous administration. According to Department of Homeland Security officials, Arias was driving his five-year-old son, Liam Ramos, to school when agents approached the vehicle.

What happened next became the subject of significant misrepresentation. When ICE agents approached, Arias fled on foot, abandoning his young son in the vehicle. One ICE officer remained with the child to ensure his safety while other officers pursued and apprehended Arias.

Despite these documented facts, Representative Ilhan Omar of Minnesota shared a local news report on social media claiming that “ICE just detained a 5-year-old child.” Her post, which characterized the operation as “absolutely vile,” was shared thousands of times and amplified by numerous other accounts.

The Department of Homeland Security has provided a detailed account of the standard procedures followed in this case. Parents who are apprehended are given options regarding their children. They may choose to be removed from the country with their children, or ICE will place the children with a safe person designated by the parent. These procedures, officials note, remain consistent with those of previous administrations.

The government has also made available through the CBP Home application a voluntary departure program that provides illegal aliens with transportation and $2,600 in assistance. Officials indicate that those who utilize this program preserve the possibility of returning to the United States through legal channels in the future.

Vice President Vance’s appearance in Minneapolis was intended to address what he and other administration officials view as a deliberate mischaracterization of immigration enforcement operations. The distinction between detaining a child and ensuring a child’s safety after being abandoned by a fleeing parent is not a subtle one.

This incident has become emblematic of broader tensions surrounding the current administration’s immigration enforcement priorities. The administration maintains it is conducting targeted operations against individuals who entered the country illegally, while critics contend the enforcement actions are indiscriminate and cruel.

The circulation of inaccurate information in this case raises questions about the responsibility of public officials and media organizations to verify facts before amplifying claims that generate significant public response. A five-year-old child was indeed present during an ICE operation, but the circumstances of that presence and the actions of the agents involved differ substantially from initial reports.

The father, Adrian Alexander Conejo Arias, remains in ICE custody. The disposition of his son’s care has not been publicly disclosed, though officials indicate standard protocols for such situations were followed.

That is the way it is.
