Two bank employees lost their lives Thursday in what authorities are describing as a robbery turned deadly at a U.S. Bank branch in Berea, Kentucky. The suspect, who remains at large, is the subject of an intensive manhunt involving local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.
Kentucky State Police reported that a male suspect entered the bank wearing a light-colored hooded sweatshirt, mask, and gloves before opening fire on two employees, a man and a woman. Both victims died at the scene. Their identities have not been released pending notification of family members.
The incident occurred in Berea, a community located approximately 36 miles south of Lexington, leaving residents shaken and law enforcement officials expressing both grief and determination.
“This is a terrible day for Berea,” said Trooper Scottie Pennington, a state police spokesperson, during a news briefing Thursday afternoon. “They’re our people that work in our community, and they’re no longer with us.”
Authorities have released a photograph of the suspect and are appealing to the public for assistance. The individual is described as approximately six feet three inches tall and was last seen fleeing the scene on foot. Investigators have not confirmed whether the suspect left the bank with any money or other items.
“We have some leads and we’re trying our best to bring this evil person to justice,” Pennington stated, emphasizing the urgency of the investigation.
Law enforcement officials are urging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity, no matter how insignificant it may seem. “If you see something strange and you don’t feel right about it, call us,” Pennington advised.
The incident prompted immediate safety measures throughout the area. Several nearby schools were temporarily placed on lockdown as a precautionary measure until officials could determine that the campuses were secure. Students were not permitted to leave on buses and instead required parental pickup, adding to the disruption felt throughout the community.
The response to the incident has been comprehensive, with Kentucky State Police coordinating efforts alongside local law enforcement, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and other federal agencies. The multi-agency approach reflects both the severity of the crime and the priority placed on apprehending the suspect.
U.S. Bank released a statement expressing condolences and pledging support for the victims’ families and affected employees. “We’re deeply saddened by the tragic event that took the lives of two of our employees at our Berea, Kentucky branch earlier today,” the company stated. “Our hearts go out to the families of the victims, our colleagues and the entire Berea community.”
