Two individuals are in custody following a dangerous escalation at dueling protests near Gracie Mansion in Manhattan on Saturday, where suspected explosive devices packed with metal fragments were thrown toward crowds and police officers.

The incident unfolded late Saturday morning on New York City’s Upper East Side, where approximately 145 demonstrators gathered for opposing protests near the mayor’s official residence. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch informed the public that investigators are working to determine whether the devices constituted functional explosives or elaborate hoaxes, cautioning that preliminary information remains subject to change as the investigation proceeds.

The day’s events began around 11 a.m. when roughly 20 participants assembled for a demonstration organized by individuals associated with January 6 defendant Jake Lang. The protest, advertised under the title “Stop the Islamic Takeover of New York City, Stop New York City Public Muslim Prayer,” drew a counter-demonstration of approximately 125 people at its peak, gathered under the banner “Run the Nazis out of New York City, Stand Against Hate.”

Police officers established designated protest areas to separate the two groups, but the situation deteriorated rapidly as noon approached. At 12:15 p.m., authorities arrested a protester from the Lang-affiliated demonstration after that individual deployed pepper spray against counter-protesters.

The situation took a far more serious turn twenty minutes later. According to police reports, an 18-year-old counter-protester identified as Amir Balat ignited and threw a device toward the opposing protest area. Multiple witnesses observed flames and smoke trailing the projectile as it traveled through the air before striking a barrier and extinguishing mere feet from police officers positioned at the scene.

Balat fled immediately after throwing the first device. Investigators report that he obtained a second device from a 19-year-old man tentatively identified as Ibrahim Nick. Police state that Balat ignited this second device while running before dropping it in the vicinity. Officers responded swiftly, securing the area and apprehending both suspects.

The entire incident was recorded on NYPD surveillance cameras, providing investigators with clear documentation of the events as they unfolded.

Commissioner Tisch’s statement emphasized that the devices were reportedly packed with nuts, bolts, and screws—materials commonly associated with improvised explosive devices designed to maximize injury through shrapnel. The proximity of the devices to both civilians and law enforcement personnel underscores the potential severity of the incident, regardless of whether the devices prove to have been functional explosives.

The investigation remains active as authorities work to determine the full nature of the threat, the construction and capabilities of the devices, and whether additional individuals may have been involved in their creation or deployment. Both suspects remain in custody as the NYPD continues its inquiry into this alarming breach of public safety in one of America’s most prominent cities.
