President Donald Trump will visit Corpus Christi, Texas, on Friday to promote his administration’s energy policies as three Republican candidates compete in one of the nation’s most closely watched Senate primaries.
Senator John Cornyn, the incumbent, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, and Representative Wesley Hunt are all expected to attend the president’s event. However, Trump has declined to offer a public endorsement in the race, stating earlier this month that he supports “all three” candidates.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt indicated the president would focus on economic matters during his visit, saying Trump “looks forward to returning to the great State of Texas this week to discuss the economy and tout his ‘Drill Baby Drill’ agenda.”
The Republican primary takes place Tuesday. If no candidate secures a majority of votes, a runoff election will be held on May 26. The Republican nominee will face either Representative Jasmine Crockett or state Senator James Talarico, who are competing in their own closely contested Democratic primary.
Recent polling suggests Paxton holds a lead in the Republican race, though political observers note that a runoff could substantially alter the race’s dynamics depending on which candidates advance. Paxton has secured backing from Turning Point Action, while Cornyn maintains support from the National Republican Senatorial Committee.
With the primary approaching, all three Republican candidates have emphasized their alignment with the president’s policy agenda. The National Republican Senatorial Committee’s Communications Director, Joanna Rodriguez, stated that “no one has worked harder than John Cornyn and President Trump to reinvigorate our economy and lower costs for families, workers, and small businesses.”
The Hunt campaign characterized the president’s visit as “an honor,” noting that Hunt has “stood with President Trump from the very beginning.”
The timing of Trump’s visit coincides with a significant energy policy development. Energy Secretary Chris Wright recently approved a plan permitting increased exports of American natural gas from a major facility in Corpus Christi. This decision aligns with the administration’s broader strategy to expand domestic energy production and strengthen America’s position in global energy markets.
The Texas Senate race has drawn national attention not only because of the state’s political importance but also due to the competitive nature of the Republican primary. With three viable candidates and Trump’s stated neutrality, the outcome remains uncertain as voters prepare to cast their ballots.
The president’s decision to remain publicly neutral represents a departure from his typical approach in Republican primaries, where he has frequently offered early endorsements. His stated support for all three candidates suggests either genuine difficulty in choosing among them or a strategic calculation to avoid alienating supporters of any particular candidate ahead of the general election.
As the primary enters its final days, the contest remains wide open, with each campaign making its closing arguments to Texas voters.
