President Donald Trump has endorsed Brandon Herrera in the race for Texas’ 23rd Congressional District, following the withdrawal of incumbent Representative Tony Gonzales amid an ethics investigation into an extramarital affair with a former staffer.

The endorsement came Wednesday after Gonzales publicly acknowledged the relationship during a radio appearance, one day after advancing to a Republican primary runoff. The admission prompted an ethics inquiry that ultimately led to his departure from the race.

Herrera, a Second Amendment activist and social media personality, received the president’s backing with a characteristically enthusiastic statement emphasizing his alignment with the administration’s priorities.

“Brandon is strongly supported by many highly respected MAGA warriors in Texas and Republicans in the U.S. House,” Trump stated. “As your next congressman, he will work tirelessly to advance our Make America Great Again agenda.”

The president outlined a comprehensive list of policy priorities he expects Herrera to champion, including economic growth, tax and regulatory reform, domestic manufacturing, energy independence, election security, school choice, border security, crime reduction, and support for military personnel, veterans, and law enforcement. Trump also emphasized Herrera’s commitment to protecting Second Amendment rights, which he described as “always under siege.”

The Texas 23rd District race has drawn significant attention due to its competitive nature and the circumstances surrounding Gonzales’s exit. The district, which stretches from San Antonio to El Paso along the Mexican border, has historically been a battleground for both parties.

Herrera’s candidacy represents a shift toward a more explicitly conservative platform in the district. His background as a Second Amendment advocate and his social media presence have helped him build a substantial following among grassroots conservative voters, particularly younger Republicans who engage with political content through digital platforms.

The ethics investigation into Gonzales centered on allegations regarding his relationship with a former staff member. While the congressman admitted to the affair during his radio appearance, the full scope of the investigation and its findings remain unclear. The timing of the revelation, coming immediately after his advancement to a runoff election, raised questions about when party leadership became aware of the situation.

The race now moves forward with Herrera as the Republican candidate, carrying the president’s endorsement into what is expected to be a closely watched contest. Trump’s backing provides significant momentum in a district where his support carries considerable weight among Republican primary voters.

The outcome of this race will be viewed as a measure of Trump’s continued influence within the Republican Party and the strength of candidates who align themselves closely with his policy agenda. For Texas Republicans, the seat represents an opportunity to consolidate support around a candidate untainted by the ethics concerns that derailed Gonzales’s reelection bid.

As the general election approaches, both parties will be watching closely to see whether Herrera can maintain the momentum provided by the presidential endorsement and convert it into victory in November.
