President Donald Trump has taken steps to relieve Lisa Cook from her role as a governor on the Federal Reserve Board. Trump communicated his decision in a letter dated Monday, stating, “You are hereby removed from your position on the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve, effective immediately.”
Last week, Cook asserted that she had no intention of resigning, despite Trump’s demand, sparked by an allegation from one of his administrators. Bill Pulte, the chief of the agency that oversees mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and a Trump appointee, asserted on a social media platform that Cook had claimed two primary residences, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and Atlanta, in 2021, in an effort to secure more favorable mortgage terms. It’s well-known that mortgage rates are typically higher for second homes or for properties acquired for rental purposes.

Trump wrote in his letter, “In light of your deceitful and potentially criminal conduct in a financial matter, [the American people] cannot and I do not have such confidence in your integrity.” It remains unclear whether these allegations against Cook will meet the necessary standards for dismissal. According to The Hill, a president can dismiss members of the Federal Reserve board for cause, but it is uncertain if this case falls within that rule.
