Following a phone call Monday between Trump and Sheinbaum, the Mexican president said they had agreed to postpone tariffs for at least a month.
The tariffs of 25 percent on Mexico were set to take effect Tuesday. Trump and Sheinbaum both said that Mexico would send 10,000 soldiers along the U.S. border to stop the flow of illegal immigrants and fentanyl.
Trump stated in a Truth Social posting that his call with Sheinbaum had been “friendly”.
He said: “I am looking forward to taking part in these negotiations with President Sheinbaum as we try to reach a deal’ between our countries.”
Sheinbaum, in turn, called her conversation with Trump a “good one” and reiterated that the agreement to send Mexican soldiers along the border was to stop the flow of migrants and drugs.

Sheinbaum, in a Spanish-translated post on the social platform X, said: “We had a great conversation with President Trump. We showed a lot of respect for our relationship with him and our sovereignty. We reached several agreements.”
Sheinbaum added that the U.S. “is committed to working to prevent the trafficking of high-powered weapons to Mexico.”
Trump signed off on Saturday on tariffs of 25 percent on Mexico and Canada, and 10 percent on China. This appears to be the beginning of a major trade war. All three countries responded quickly to the move. Justin Trudeau, Canadian Prime Minister, announced Sunday night that Canada will impose tariffs of 25 percent on over $100 billion worth of U.S. products.
Sheinbaum, for her part, responded in a Spanish post on X on Saturday that her team is working on a solution that includes measures to defend the interests of her country.
Trump claimed that he spoke with Trudeau on Monday morning about the tariffs he wants to impose on Canada. He said they would talk again in the afternoon.
China’s Ministry of Commerce announced that it would bring a case against the United States before the World Trade Organization.
