Donald Trump, the President-elect, criticized Democrats Thursday night for voting to shut down the government.

In a short statement, Trump stated that “nearly every House Democrat voted just against funding the government and to shut it down.”

He added, “These 197 Democrats have voted against disaster relief and assistance for farmers, as well as keeping the government open.”

The Democrats joined a few dozen Republicans to vote overwhelmingly against the second effort at a continuing resolution Thursday evening. Trump backed this CR, and he called for the new legislation to include a suspension of the debt ceiling. This bill would have extended the suspension of the debt ceiling until 2027.

JD Vance, the Vice President-elect, and other Republicans have also criticized this second attempt to pass a CR.

Vance stated in a press release that “the Democrats just voted for the shutdown of the government even though we have a clean CR because they did not want to give President Obama negotiating leverage either during his first term or the first year after his second term.” “And two, they’d rather shut down the government than fight for global bull ****. “They’ve requested a shutdown, and I believe that’s what they will get.”

Congress usually has some leeway when it comes to weekend deadlines. There is greater pressure to end this fight than usual, as legislators are eager to return home for the holidays.
