Top Canadian diplomats are warning against Donald Trump’s plans to impose tariffs on Canadian goods, saying that both Canada and the United States will suffer.

Bob Rae said, “If you place too many obstacles in the way of commerce, or if you place too many taxes, tariffs, and other restrictions in your path, then you will slow down everything, lay off people, lose jobs, and lose prosperity” during an MSNBC appearance Sunday.

Trump made the comments after confirming on Thursday that his 25% tariff will go into effect on March 4th. He argued that dangerous drugs like fentanyl are still spilling across the U.S. border. The border between the United States and Canada is being crossed at an alarming pace.

“The proposed TARIFFS are scheduled to take effect on MARCH 4TH and will indeed go into force as planned. China will also be assessed an extra 10% tariff on this date. The April 2nd reciprocal tariff date will continue to be in full effect,” Trump stated in a Truth Social post.

Trump initially agreed to the 30-day suspension of the tariff plan to give time to negotiate between Canada and the U.S. about how to improve border security. However, the President argued on Thursday that there had not been enough done to stop the flood within the 30-day window.

Trump stated, “We can’t allow the scourge of ISIS to continue harming America.”

In addition to the trade dispute between Canada and the United States, Canada is also transitioning into a new leader in the months ahead after the current Premier, Justin Trudeau, declared in January that his nine-year reign as Prime Minister of Canada would end.

Trudeau announced that he would remain in his position until the Liberal Party chooses a new leader. The suspension of parliament until March 24, 2019.

Rae stated that the Canadians don’t understand the logic behind the tariff negotiations with Trump.

“We will get through this. It’s something we will have to face.” Rae stated, “It would cost both jobs and the economy on either side of the border. What’s the point of raising the prices for all? We don’t understand the logic behind it. That’s why we continue to convince the American government to think twice and to reflect on the benefits and costs of trade, as well as the lack of benefit of increased tariffs.”
