A winter sledding outing turned fatal Sunday afternoon in Frisco, Texas, when a teenage girl lost her life in an accident involving a vehicle towing a sled through a residential neighborhood.
The Frisco Police Department responded to the scene shortly before 3 p.m. Sunday following reports of a sledding accident on a residential street. Officers and firefighters discovered two 16-year-old girls suffering from life-threatening injuries. First responders immediately administered life-saving measures and transported both victims to local hospitals.
One of the teenagers succumbed to her injuries at the hospital. The second victim remains in critical condition.
According to preliminary findings from the police investigation, a 16-year-old male was operating a Jeep Wrangler while towing the two girls on a sled behind the vehicle. Witnesses at the scene reported that the sled struck a curb before colliding with a tree.
The deceased has been identified through social media as Elizabeth Angle, a sophomore at Wakeland High School. Angle was an active member of her school’s soccer team and also played for FC Dallas, a competitive club team. Her mother, Megan Angle, confirmed her daughter’s death through a social media post.
The Frisco Police Department has declined to officially release the identities of any of the three teenagers involved in the incident, citing their status as juveniles. The investigation into the accident remains ongoing.
The tragedy occurred as a massive winter storm continued to impact multiple states across the nation, bringing hazardous conditions and unprecedented snowfall to regions unaccustomed to such severe weather. Texas has been particularly hard hit, with many areas receiving significant snow and ice accumulation that has created dangerous conditions on roadways and residential streets.
Meteorologists have warned that another nor’easter could strike affected areas in the coming days, potentially compounding the already treacherous conditions that have led to numerous accidents and weather-related incidents across the country.
This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers associated with winter recreational activities, particularly when vehicles are involved. While sledding remains a popular pastime during winter storms, safety experts consistently warn against towing sleds with motorized vehicles due to the inherent risks and lack of control over the sled’s trajectory and speed.
The Frisco community has begun mourning the loss of the young student, with makeshift memorials appearing near the accident site. The investigation continues as authorities work to determine the full circumstances surrounding this tragic accident.
