Investigators working to solve the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie have traveled to Florida to advance DNA analysis in the case, authorities announced Friday.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that members of the task force dedicated to finding the 84-year-old woman met with laboratory scientists to explore additional avenues of investigation. According to the department’s statement, officials discussed multiple approaches to advancing the case, which has now entered its ninth month without resolution.
Nancy Guthrie, mother of national morning television co-host Savannah Guthrie, vanished from her Tucson, Arizona, home in February. Federal authorities have classified the case as a kidnapping for ransom, though concrete developments have been scarce in recent months.
The investigation reached a critical juncture in late July when federal law enforcement officials confirmed that hair samples recovered during the probe did not match any potential suspects. That announcement marked one of the few substantial updates in a case that has captured national attention throughout the year.
The task force’s trip to Florida represents a renewed effort to extract meaningful evidence from physical materials collected during the investigation. While authorities have not specified which laboratory facility the investigators visited or what particular DNA techniques they discussed, the move signals that investigators believe forensic analysis may yet yield breakthrough information.
Savannah Guthrie has maintained a public presence regarding her mother’s disappearance, regularly appealing to the public for assistance. In August, she shared a photograph of her mother and expressed the family’s continued anguish. “There is a hole inside us that can never be filled. There is an ache that cannot be softened,” she wrote, adding that the family maintains an unwavering determination to discover what happened and provide her mother with a proper memorial celebrating her life.
The sheriff’s department emphasized Friday that investigators welcome any information from the public, regardless of how insignificant it may seem. “No tip is too small,” the department stated. “Even the smallest piece of information could be critical to this investigation.”
Authorities have provided two contact numbers for anyone with relevant information: 88-CRIME and 1-800-CALL-FBI. The involvement of both local and federal agencies underscores the serious nature of the case and the resources being devoted to its resolution.
As the case approaches the one-year mark, the Florida laboratory consultations suggest investigators are exploring every available scientific avenue. Modern DNA analysis techniques have evolved considerably in recent years, offering possibilities for evidence examination that may not have existed even a decade ago.
The Guthrie family and investigators alike continue to hope that forensic science, combined with public vigilance, will ultimately provide answers in this troubling case.
