A 41-year-old Lebanese-born American citizen has been identified as the suspect who attacked a Jewish synagogue in Michigan on Thursday, according to three law enforcement sources and confirmation from the Department of Homeland Security.
Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, a resident of Dearborn Heights, Michigan, allegedly drove a vehicle into Temple Israel, a large Reform Jewish synagogue in West Bloomfield, at approximately 12:30 p.m. local time. After ramming the building, Ghazali exited the vehicle armed with a rifle and engaged in a gunfight with armed security personnel stationed at the synagogue. The security guard shot and killed the assailant.
Dearborn Heights Mayor Mo Baydoun stated that Ghazali reportedly targeted the Jewish community following family losses in Lebanon during that country’s ongoing conflict with Israel. The Department of Homeland Security confirmed the attacker’s identity and indicated that Ghazali had entered the United States on a spousal visa from Lebanon.
