The United States Coast Guard has launched an extensive search operation for two fishermen whose vessel was discovered empty approximately 70 miles off the coast of Fort Myers, Florida, early Saturday morning.

Randall Spivey, 57, and his nephew Brandon Billmaier, 33, departed for a fishing expedition Friday morning with plans to return that afternoon. When the men failed to arrive home by 7:30 p.m. Friday evening and could not be reached, their families contacted authorities.

The Coast Guard deployed a helicopter at approximately 11:00 p.m. Friday to begin search operations. At 1:30 a.m. Saturday, the families received word that the men’s vessel had been located, but both fishermen were absent from the boat.

Spivey, described as standing 6 feet 1 inch tall, was last seen wearing khaki pants and a dark-colored shirt when he left Friday morning.

“We’ve gotta find them. Please. Please, please find them,” said Tricia Spivey, Randall’s wife. “They’re amazing people. I mean, I just need him back. He needs to come back to us.”

The discovery of an empty vessel at such a distance from shore presents searchers with significant challenges. The circumstances under which the two men became separated from their boat remain unknown at this time.

The families have issued a public appeal for assistance, requesting that anyone with access to vessels who is willing and able to aid in the search effort contact authorities. They have also asked the community to keep both men in their prayers during this difficult time.

The Coast Guard is leading the search operation and has requested that anyone with information regarding the missing fishermen contact Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg at 866-881-1392.

This incident serves as a reminder of the inherent risks associated with offshore fishing, even for experienced mariners. The waters off Florida’s Gulf Coast, while popular for recreational and commercial fishing, can present unexpected hazards.

Search and rescue operations continue as families maintain hope for the safe return of both men. The Coast Guard has not released details regarding the condition of the recovered vessel or any evidence that might indicate what led to the men’s disappearance.

As this search enters its second day, time remains a critical factor. The families’ plea for community assistance underscores both the urgency of the situation and the importance of coordinated rescue efforts in maritime emergencies.
