Elon Musk, Trump’s adviser and billionaire, is the head of the Department of Government Efficiency. More than 20 civil servants resigned from the department on Tuesday. They said they refused to use their expertise in technical areas to “dismantle essential public services”.

In a letter of resignation, the 21 staffers stated that they had sworn to serve the American public and to uphold their oaths to the Constitution throughout presidential administrations. It has become apparent that we cannot honor these commitments.

Employees also warned that Musk’s enlistment of political ideologues to reduce the size of the federal government under Donald Trump was not a good idea. They lacked the skills and experience needed for the job.

Musk’s and President Trump’s efforts to purge the federal workforce through tech are temporarily set back by the mass resignations of engineers, data analysts, and product managers. The mass resignations come amid a series of court challenges to stop, stall, or undo their efforts to terminate or coerce thousands of government workers from their jobs.

The staffers who resigned were employed by what was formerly known as the United States Digital Service. This office was established under President Barack Obama’s administration following the botched launch of Healthcare.gov. Healthcare.gov is the website used by millions of Americans to sign up for health insurance plans via the Democrat’s signature law on health care.
