Donald Trump highlighted on Friday the support that he received from United Auto Workers by saying that they are “100% right” in their belief that tariffs “are needed.”

The UAW issued a statement on Tuesday, saying that they fully support Trump’s efforts in ending the “free-trade disaster.”

“The United Auto Workers of America’s head just said that TARIFFS ARE NEEDED to correct years of abuse of America by other countries and corporations. Since the start of NAFTA, we have lost 90,000 factories and plants. HE IS 100 % CORRECT!” Trump posted a message to Truth Social.

Trump did not mention Shawn Fain, the UAW president. Trump and Fain had a lot of disagreements during the last presidential campaign. Fain spoke at the Democratic National Convention and supported Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee.

Trump pledged on Thursday to eliminate the “massive” trade deficit that reached record levels under former president Joe Biden.

The trade deficit reached a record high of $131.4 billion, which was 34% higher than the $98.1 billion deficit in December. The Bureau of Economic Analysis of the Commerce Department announced the biggest percentage change since March 2015 in the trade deficit.
