A situation unfolded in the early hours of Sunday in the Brownsville neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York City. It has been reported that a 35-year-old male was fatally shot by several police officers. The incident occurred after the man allegedly forced his way into a police precinct and attacked an on-duty officer with a butcher knife, according to the New York Police Department.

The event took place close to the 73rd Precinct station house, where the suspect reportedly slashed an officer with a knife that authorities state had a 14-inch blade. “Every day our officers put on their uniforms, they encounter dangerous situations out in the street, but it’s another kind of danger when someone comes directly into a precinct armed with a knife and attacks our officers,” said Chief of Patrol Phillip Rivera of the NYPD at a Sunday news conference. The name of the suspect was not immediately released, and a motive for his actions is currently under investigation.

The attack commenced at about 5:24 a.m. when the suspect was recorded on surveillance video attempting to enter the locked front door of the police precinct. The suspect allegedly then proceeded to the rear of the station house, entering through a door designated for authorized NYPD personnel only. “He entered the rear of the precinct and was immediately confronted by a police officer who was assigned to station-house security,” Rivera said.

When the officer directed the man towards the front of the station house for assistance, he allegedly drew the butcher knife and attacked her. Despite this, the officer was able to fend him off. Reports indicate the suspect ran out of the back door, still armed with the knife. Several officers pursued him, repeatedly ordering him to drop the weapon.

At some point, Rivera stated, the suspect “lunged at an officer with the knife extended toward that officer,” which prompted several officers to open fire, striking the suspect multiple times. The suspect was then transported to Brookdale Hospital Medical Center in Brooklyn, where he was pronounced dead.

The injured officer was taken to a hospital, treated for superficial injuries, and subsequently released. Patrick Hendry, president of the Police Benevolent Association union, stated, “Thank god our sister is on the road to recovery, but this was a clear targeted attack on New York City police officers.”
