Comedian Conan O’Brien opened the 98th Academy Awards ceremony Sunday evening with a pointed jab at conservative media organization Turning Point USA and musician Kid Rock, referencing their alternative Super Bowl halftime show held last month.
Speaking from the stage at the Dolby Theatre, O’Brien addressed the audience with a warning about political content during the broadcast. He then pivoted to mockery of the conservative counter-programming effort.
“I should warn you, tonight could get political. And if that makes you uncomfortable, there’s an alternate Oscars being hosted by Kid Rock. Yeah, it’s at the Dave & Buster’s down the street. A lot of tickets for that,” O’Brien stated during his opening remarks.
The joke referenced Turning Point USA’s decision to produce an alternative halftime show during the Super Bowl, which featured Kid Rock as the headline performer. The event was positioned as a patriotic alternative to the National Football League’s official halftime show, which featured Puerto Rican artist Bad Bunny.
The Turning Point USA halftime show also included performances from country music artists Brantley Gilbert, Lee Brice, and Gabby Barrett. The organization marketed the event as an option for viewers who preferred traditional American entertainment over the league’s increasingly diverse performer selections.
The conservative organization’s decision to create counter-programming reflected broader tensions between traditional entertainment industry values and conservative cultural preferences. Turning Point USA, founded by Charlie Kirk, has positioned itself as a leading voice for young conservatives and frequently challenges mainstream entertainment choices.
O’Brien’s comment represented a familiar pattern in award show hosting, where comedians often use their platform to address political and cultural divisions. The Academy Awards have long served as a stage for political commentary, though such moments have generated varying degrees of controversy depending on the target and tone.
The reference to Dave & Buster’s, a chain restaurant and arcade venue, appeared designed to diminish the significance of the conservative alternative programming by suggesting it lacked the prestige and viewership of mainstream events.
The joke landed during a ceremony already anticipated to feature political commentary, as Hollywood’s liberal establishment has rarely shied from using major award shows to advance progressive causes and critique conservative figures and movements.
Whether O’Brien’s opening salvo set the tone for additional political moments throughout the evening remained to be seen as the ceremony progressed. The Academy Awards broadcast continued with the presentation of awards across two dozen categories recognizing achievement in film production, acting, directing, and technical crafts.
The incident underscored the ongoing cultural divide between coastal entertainment elites and conservative Americans who increasingly view mainstream Hollywood as disconnected from their values and priorities.
