A domestic dispute in Queens escalated into a catastrophic explosion early Thursday morning, leaving seven New York Police Department officers injured and a suspect dead in what authorities are describing as a deliberate act of violence.

The incident unfolded shortly before 3 a.m. when officers responded to a 911 call at a residence on 130th Street in South Richmond Hill. A family member of 50-year-old Anoop Parasram had contacted authorities, reporting the smell of gas inside the home and expressing concern about the suspect’s behavior.

According to NYPD Assistant Chief Christopher McIntosh, Parasram had allegedly forced entry into the residence through a basement window while intoxicated and armed with a knife. His daughter and two grandchildren managed to escape to safety before officers arrived. Another victim whom Parasram had been threatening with the knife also fled the scene.

When police arrived approximately 15 minutes after the initial emergency call, they were provided a key to the residence by one of the victims. As officers positioned themselves at the front door and attempted entry, a massive explosion erupted, engulfing the home in flames and triggering a five-alarm fire response.

The force of the blast threw multiple officers off their feet, with some being launched into gates at the front of the residence. Bodycam footage released by the department captured the harrowing moments during and after the explosion, with one officer heard saying, “The guy just set the house on fire, we’ve got an explosion.”

Despite their injuries, officers immediately rushed into the damaged structure and evacuated residents, including several children, from the area. All seven injured officers were reported to be in stable condition.

The explosion caused significant damage to multiple homes in the neighborhood, displacing more than a dozen residents. The American Red Cross responded to provide temporary housing assistance for 18 adults and seven children affected by the incident.

A body believed to be that of Parasram was later recovered from the rubble. Investigators have since learned that the suspect had three expired orders of protection against him, and police had been called to the residence on numerous occasions in the past.

Security footage obtained from a neighbor appears to show an individual carrying two garbage bags filled with canisters of an unknown substance prior to the incident. Authorities continue to investigate the exact cause of the explosion and the contents of those containers.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani commended the first responders for their actions, describing their response as demonstrating “extraordinary bravery” in the face of immediate danger.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine the full circumstances surrounding this tragic incident. The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers face when responding to domestic violence calls, which remain among the most unpredictable and potentially lethal situations police encounter.

The quick actions of the responding officers undoubtedly saved lives, as they managed to evacuate residents from the blast zone despite their own injuries and the immediate threat of fire spreading through the neighborhood.
