Reports from Fremont, Nebraska, indicate that a significant explosion has occurred at the Horizon Biofuels plant, leaving three individuals unaccounted for and emergency services grappling with a complex rescue operation.
At approximately midday on Tuesday, a large explosion rocked the Horizon Biofuels facility, a manufacturer of fuel pellets and animal bedding located some 40 miles northwest of Omaha. Fire Chief Todd Bernt reports that upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy smoke and substantial flames, compounded by significant structural collapse.
According to Fremont Mayor Joey Spellerberg, three people were inside the plant at the time of the explosion. However, due to the extensive structural damage and the presence of mangled steel, fire crews have been unable to access the building to search. This raises important questions about the fate of those unaccounted for.
Chief Bernt indicates that the fire remains active, particularly in the facility’s tower. The presence of wood and alcohol-based materials within the plant complicates firefighting efforts. Consequently, fire crews are expected to remain on site for several days.
