The police in Munich are investigating a mystery. More than 1,000 stickers have been placed on gravestones or wooden crosses in three cemeteries of the German city without any indication as to where they originated from or why.

The 5×3.5 centimeter (1.95×1.2 inch) stickers have a QR code that, when scanned by a smartphone, displays the name and location of the grave.

“We haven’t found any pattern behind this yet. The stickers were put both on decades-old gravestones and very new graves that so far only have a wooden cross,” police spokesperson Christian Drexler told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

Drexler asked anyone who had seen someone place the stickers on graves to contact the cemetery administration.

Recent stickers have appeared at the Sendlinger Friedhof, Waldfriedhof, and Friedhof Solln cemeteries.

The police are investigating not only who was behind the stickers but also property damage because gravestones have been partially damaged and discolored after the stickers were removed.
