Reports from Grand Blanc Township, Michigan, indicate that members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have raised over $150,000 for the family of Thomas Jacob Sanford, the man responsible for a deadly attack on their church.
On Sunday, Sanford opened fire at the church, killing four people before setting the property ablaze. In the aftermath of this tragedy, a fundraising campaign was initiated on the GiveSendGo platform, reportedly reaching $152,000 as of Wednesday morning.

The campaign organizer, David Butler, describes himself as an ordinary church member with no direct connections to Sanford or the affected community. Donors identifying themselves as church members from various states, including Missouri, Hawaii, and Utah, have contributed to the fund.

The campaign aims to support Sanford’s wife and children, who now face financial hardship and psychological trauma. According to Butler’s statement, one of Sanford’s sons requires ongoing medical care for serious health challenges.
This outpouring of support comes amid reports from Sanford’s acquaintances that he had long expressed animosity toward the church. Two childhood friends of Sanford have stated that his negative sentiments began years ago, following a relationship with a Mormon girlfriend in Utah.

These friends describe a marked change in Sanford’s behavior and attitudes after his return from Utah, where he allegedly developed a methamphetamine addiction following his service in the Marines.
This raises important questions about the intersection of personal grievances, mental health, and community response in the face of tragedy. As the investigation continues, many aspects of this situation remain unclear.
