Philadelphia authorities are conducting an extensive investigation into the disappearances of five women whose images were discovered during a search of a residence earlier this year, officials disclosed Wednesday.
The investigation began in June with the arrest of Eugene Horsch, 44, on charges related to firearms, narcotics, and alleged impersonation of law enforcement. What began as a standard criminal case has evolved into something far more troubling for investigators.
During the search of Horsch’s residence, authorities recovered five urns believed to contain human ashes. Three have been preliminarily identified as belonging to Horsch’s father, a relative, and a friend. The contents of the remaining two urns remain unidentified, according to Deputy Commissioner Frank Vanore of the Philadelphia Police Department.
The investigation took a more serious turn when authorities discovered more than one million digital images and videos at the property. Among these files were photographs showing women posed in various positions throughout the house, some appearing unconscious.
Two of the women identified in these images are 27-year-old Gabrielle Amarando and 26-year-old Maribel Fresses, both reported missing. Photographs dated from 2017 show these women lying unconscious in the residence. Neither woman has been located.
Perhaps most disturbing is video evidence dated 2017 showing Horsch’s now-deceased father, RC Horsch, with an unidentified woman. In this footage, both individuals were unclothed. The video allegedly shows the woman using narcotics before being given money and then restrained to a bed with handcuffs. According to Vanore, RC Horsch then placed a zip tie around her neck, and she became unconscious.
The deputy commissioner emphasized that investigators must still find corroborating evidence for what appears in the video. While the woman appeared lifeless, Vanore stressed that this is merely how it appeared on video, and no bodies have been recovered in connection with the investigation.
Three additional women of concern have been identified in the images: the woman from the video, a 25-year-old woman who appeared unconscious, and another woman who remains unidentified. Police are respecting family wishes by not publicly releasing the names of two of these women.
Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel addressed the scope of the investigation, stating that authorities will control the pace of this complex case. Approximately thirty percent of the digital evidence has been reviewed thus far. From the material examined, investigators have identified 58 individuals, some of whom have already been interviewed. Efforts continue to locate and speak with the others.
Bethel assured the public that there is no current threat to the community.
The investigation remains active, and authorities have made clear that the sheer volume of digital evidence requires methodical examination. No human remains have been found connected to the residence at this time.
This case serves as a reminder of the painstaking work required in modern investigations, where digital evidence can number in the millions of individual items, each requiring careful review and analysis.
