Mary Jo Shannon, the matriarch of one of America’s most recognizable families and a recurring presence on reality television for over a decade, died Thursday at the age of 91. Her death came just days before she would have celebrated her 92nd birthday.
Her daughter, Kris Jenner, announced the death through a public statement on social media, describing her mother as the heart of their family and crediting her with instilling the values that shaped multiple generations.
“She taught me everything that truly matters: to love your family fiercely, to be kind, to show up for the people you love, and to never take a single moment together for granted,” Jenner wrote in her tribute.
Shannon, known affectionately as “MJ” to her family and to viewers of the family’s television programs, was born in Arkansas in 1933. She later established herself as a businesswoman in San Diego, where she operated Shannon & Company, a clothing boutique that became something of a training ground for her grandchildren.
Kim Kardashian, who has built a business empire estimated in the billions, has frequently acknowledged her grandmother’s influence on her professional development. In her own statement following Shannon’s death, Kardashian noted that Shannon gave her her first job at the San Diego store and taught her fundamental lessons about work ethic, strength, and confidence that remained with her throughout her career.
Shannon became familiar to millions of Americans through her appearances on the family’s reality television programs, first on one network and later on a streaming service. Her most recent appearance came at her 90th birthday celebration, which was filmed for the program. True to form, she arrived wearing her characteristic black pantsuit and dark sunglasses, toasting with wine before blowing out candles surrounded by several of her great-grandchildren.
Family members consistently described Shannon as possessing a sharp wit and serving as the family’s resident jokester. Kardashian even suggested in her tribute that her grandmother maintained a private social media account to monitor the family’s public posts, a detail that speaks to Shannon’s engagement with modern technology despite her advanced age.
Jenner, who has managed the careers of her six children and overseen the family’s expansion into various business ventures, stated that everything she accomplished in life traced back to her mother’s influence. “I spent my life trying to live in a way that would make you proud,” she wrote.
Shannon is survived by her daughter, six grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. The family has not yet announced funeral arrangements.
In an era when multi-generational influence has become increasingly rare in American public life, Shannon’s impact on her family’s trajectory from relative obscurity to cultural prominence represents a distinctly modern American story. Her legacy, as her family noted, will continue through the traditions and values she instilled across three generations.
