South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem’s confirmation hearing as the nominee for Secretary of Homeland Security was held on Friday. DHS oversees many agencies/departments, including FEMA, the TSA, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the Secret Service, as well as all the immigration departments, including U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (CIS), Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and Immigration and Customs Enforcement are all part of DHS.
Rand Paul, the chair of the Senate Homeland Security Committee (R-KY), said that DHS’s mission was “deeply distorted” and “lost its direction,” and he hopes Noem will be able to bring about change. Gary Peters, the ranking member (D-MI), expressed concerns over cyberattacks, terrorism, and the Northern border.
Noem said in her opening remarks that securing the nation was a sacred trust.
Americans are less secure than in previous decades, even though it is a right to feel safe within their borders. In the opening remarks of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, Noem will tell the committee that for the first time in 30 years, more than 40% are afraid to go out alone at night at a distance of one mile from their homes.
The President-elect Trump will change this.
She will immediately put an end to many of the terrible things brought in by Mayorkas and Biden.
The hearing was mostly cordial. It was refreshing to see that the focus of the hearing was on the issues, and not the politics. This committee has its head screwed right. Ranking Member Peters stated that the committee wanted to get away from politics and rancor. They did a good job in handling the hearing.
Richard Blumenthal, a Connecticut Democrat Senator, asked her if she was prepared to stand up to President Trump if he threatened to stop funding for places such as California. She said Trump will uphold the Constitution, and that she will apply the law without bias.
Andy Kim, a senator from New Jersey (D), asked an excellent question regarding Tom Homan’s role in the equation. He will be the border czar. She explained that she would be responsible for all DHS agencies. Homan will be advising President Obama, and the President is in charge of border security.
Senator Bernie Moreno, R-OH, made a comparison between Mayorkas and the senator. This was gold.
Paul asked her if she was going to investigate the DHS employees who might have been involved in media censorship so that they could be held accountable. She agreed to work with them.
The committee highlighted the lack of transparency of the Biden Administration and their failure to provide them with information. Noem has generally pledged to be transparent, and not follow the failed path.
The wall will be completed as well.
If this hearing is anything to go by, it looks like Noem will have no trouble getting confirmed.
