Okay, so here’s the thing about sanctuary cities. The left claims they’re some beacon of moral virtue, standing up to the big, bad Trump administration. That’s just not true.
U.S. District Judge William Orrick from San Francisco recently issued an injunction, blocking the Trump administration from withholding federal funding from several self-proclaimed sanctuary jurisdictions. These are cities and counties that have chosen not to cooperate with the enforcement of federal immigration laws. The injunction came at the request of 16 cities and counties, including Minneapolis, New Haven, Portland, St. Paul, Santa Fe, and Seattle. Their argument? The Trump administration is unjustly trying to coerce local officials into aligning with federal immigration arrests.

The lawsuit challenged the executive order signed by Trump, which threatened to cut off federal funding for these sanctuary jurisdictions if they continued to resist cooperating with federal immigration law enforcement. “The threat to withhold funding causes them [the cities] irreparable injury in the form of budgetary uncertainty, deprivation of constitutional rights, and undermining trust between the Cities and Counties and the communities they serve,” Orrick wrote.
The idea that sanctuary laws protect constitutional rights is absurd on its face. This is a fundamental misunderstanding of immigration laws. Sanctuary laws, by definition, impede state and local law enforcement from assisting federal civil immigration officers. They essentially put local politics above the rule of law, creating a sanctuary for illegal activity.
The Justice Department has since filed a lawsuit challenging a New York law that prohibits the Democrat-led state from sharing vehicle and address information with federal immigration authorities. This is another example of the left’s illogical position on immigration enforcement.
In conclusion, this isn’t about the deprivation of constitutional rights or budgetary uncertainty. It’s about upholding the law. And that’s something the left simply cannot refute.
