On Sunday, Hollywood members took potshots at President Donald Trump while in Washington, D.C., for a Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, which was awarded to television host and comic Conan O’Brien, just weeks after Trump announced sweeping structural changes to the Kennedy Center.

Trump is the new chair of the Kennedy Center Board. He was the one who removed Kennedy Center leadership from the organization in February. The Kennedy Center Board of Trustees now includes second lady Usha Vance, White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, and White House Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino.

Comedian Sarah Silverman aimed at Trump several times on Sunday at the Mark Twain event, specifically citing a 2016 appearance of hers on Conan on TBS where she dressed up as Nazi leader Adolf Hitler.

Silverman explained: “They created a scene where Conan interviews Hitler who is embarrassed to be compared with Donald Trump.”

“I am not an obvious choice for Hitler. I mean, I am an obvious choice for Hitler,” said Silverman, who is Jewish. “Not an obvious choice to play Hitler. But they chose me, and it’s this way of thinking that makes Conan great again. I just really miss the days when you were America’s only orange a–hole.”

Silverman also remembered when, during an interview on Conan, she snapped a photo sideways of O’Brien’s lips and put the picture on her smartphone between her legs. TBS censored the image due to its similarity to female genitalia. Silverman then told the audience that they could find the picture of O’Brien with pursed lips under their seats.

Silverman told the audience, “You can leave these photos in your seat when leaving – the guy that took over likes grabbing pussy.” He was referring to the Access Hollywood tape which showed Trump bragging about kissing women and groping them due to their fame.

Leaked footage from 2005 was a leak that occurred just before the 2016 elections.

Silverman was not the only comic to make fun of Washington during the event. John Mulaney made a direct reference to Trump’s Kennedy Center shake-up by joking about the president renaming the building in honor of Roy Cohn. Cohn was Republican Sen. Joseph McCarthy’s Chief Counsel who supported a Wisconsin Senator investigating suspected Communists. Cohn was also a close friend of Trump and worked as his attorney in the 1970s & 1980s.

Mulaney stated, “It is an honor for me to be at the Kennedy Center or, as the Roy Cohn Pavilion will be called next week, The Roy Cohn Pavilion For Big Strong Men Who Like Cats.”

Will Ferrell is a comedian who won the Mark Twain Award for American Humor back in 2011. He also poked fun at Trump’s Executive Order on Thursday that would have reorganized the Department of Education.

“I don’t have time for this. You know what I’m supposed to be doing right now?” Ferrell said. “Do you have any idea? I’m supposed to be shutting down the Department of Education.”

Nikki Glaser told reporters at the Golden Globes red carpet that it would have been “insane”, not to address Trump’s shaking-up, but also to remember the evening’s purpose, which was to honor O’Brien.

Glaser said the current political atmosphere provides comedians with an opportunity to seize a “rebellious moment.”

Glaser noted that the current political climate offers comedians a “rebellious opportunity.”

Glaser said to reporters that it was easy to laugh and you could also have some fun with a bit of rebelliousness. But I won’t make it a big deal…that is not the point.”

Glaser told reporters that she was reluctant to talk about politics in the past because she did not want to alienate her audience. However, now she feels more comfortable doing so but is concerned with death threats or being doxxed.

O’Brien addressed the Kennedy Center’s shakeup and thanked former President Deborah Rutter, Chairman David Rubenstein, and other Kennedy Center staff “who worry about the future.”

O’Brien thanked Deborah Rutter, and David Rubenstein for inviting him here.

O’Brien paid tribute to Mark Twain who is the author of this award, saying that Twain “was a patriot, in the truest sense.”

O’Brien stated that “he loved America but was aware of its flaws.” According to Mark Twain, patriotism means supporting your country and government whenever they deserve it.

O’Brien said on the red carpet that the content of the Oscars next year will be based on what is happening in the world today. He also stated that the ideas and concepts for the awards are constantly changing.

O’Brien stated that he could not predict the Oscars for next year. “I couldn’t tell you now what they would be three months away, or nine months in advance,” he said.

Ferrell, Tina Fey and Dave Chappelle are among the other comedians to have won this award.
