A new law aims at making it easier for Americans to export the energy they use to heat and light their homes around the world.
Under the “Unlocking our Domestic LNG Potential Act of 2020”, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission would be granted “exclusive authority” for signing off applications to import and export liquefied gas (LNG), moving the Department of Energy away.
Reuters reports that the Biden Administration stopped clearing LNG Export Applications and published a December study warning of potential cost risks in addition to environmental concerns.
South Carolina Republican Senator Tim Scott, who is the sponsor of this bill, said it was critical for a variety of reasons, such as national security.
Scott stated that if you wanted your prices to drop, then your production would have to increase.

He added, “I recall back in 2014, when I was on the Energy Committee […] and we had Lithuania’s Minister of Energy speak to our committee about the export of LNG as a means of sidelining Russia while reducing our dependency on our adversaries.” I’ll never be able to forget the hearing he gave, as it was memorable.
Texas Republican Rep. August Pfluger is the bill’s sponsor in the House. He shared that the long-term potential benefits would “tremendously” impact his district, located between central and western Texas, since the state was “the leading LNG exporter of the United States.”
This bill will create thousands of jobs, ranging from engineering and construction to the operations at terminals on the Gulf coast. It will also give Texas’ natural gas producers a competitive advantage in the international market, which is important to ensure that Texas continues to be a leader in global energy,” he said.
Last week, the Trump administration appeared to be enthusiastic about expanding LNG domestically. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and Energy Secretary Chris Wright visited an LNG facility located in Louisiana, which was backed by an $18 million venture from Venture Global. According to the Department of Energy, the U.S. is currently the leader in the creation of natural gas.

“If you consider the America First Strategy, it can be said that an America Last Strategy is a strategy where we rely on our foreign enemies for energy. The more that we increase production in America, the more engaged we are in America First energy strategy,” he said.
This legislation was designed to act as a long-term measure that would make it more difficult for a particular administration’s policies to dictate what types of permits were approved.
Scott said that in the short-term, “having Donald Trump as president is the most powerful weapon.”
Scott continued, “Our aim, of course is to make sure in the future that no matter who holds office we will have something in place that ties the production of energy to FERC, and that way we can avoid the catastrophe that was the Biden Administration – the ability of the Department of Energy to be manipulated.”
Last year, legislation with the same name passed through the House but never reached former president Joe Biden’s desk.
