A tragic scene unfolded this week in Frankfort, Illinois, where a 40-year-old mother stands accused of murdering her two-year-old son in circumstances that bear disturbing similarities to a case she had been following closely.
Corie A. Walsh was charged Friday with three counts of first-degree murder following the death of her son, Barrett Walsh, in their home approximately 35 miles southwest of Chicago. The charges come after what authorities describe as a domestic incident that has shaken the quiet, affluent community.
Police responded to the Walsh residence shortly after 4 p.m. Tuesday on a report of an unresponsive child. Officers arrived to find a neighbor performing CPR on the toddler, whom she had discovered hanging in the basement. Despite immediate medical intervention, the child was pronounced deceased at a local hospital. The Will County Coroner’s Office has ruled the death a homicide, with preliminary autopsy findings indicating asphyxia due to ligature compression of the neck.
Upstairs, officers found Walsh in the master bathroom, lying fully clothed in a bathtub surrounded by bloody water. She had sustained cuts to her wrists and thighs in what investigators believe was a suicide attempt. She was transported to a hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening.
According to court documents filed in the petition to deny pretrial release, Walsh made disturbing statements to responding officers, claiming she committed the act because her son was “the devil” and the “anti-Christ.” The neighbor who discovered the scene reported that Walsh had been holding a knife and actively harming herself when found. After the neighbor disarmed her and discarded the knife, Walsh reportedly asked why she had intervened, stating she was attempting to take her own life. She then directed the neighbor to the basement where the child could be found.
Prosecutors have revealed a particularly troubling detail in this case. Walsh had recently become deeply invested in following the Lindsay Clancy murder trial, which has received significant national attention in recent weeks. Clancy stands accused of murdering her three children in Massachusetts in January 2023. Her trial, which was live-streamed, ended in a mistrial on Friday.
Court filings indicate Walsh had been “actively discussing the case” in group text messages with friends as recently as 12:30 p.m. on the day of the incident, merely three and a half hours before the tragedy at her home. At that time, the jury in the Clancy case was in deliberations.
Walsh’s husband was out of town when the incident occurred. An infant was also present in the home but was found unharmed. Two school-aged children had returned from school.
