Elon Musk, the leader of DOGE’s Elon Musk Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), said that “several questionable expenditures” were taking place.
Cost-cutting groups said that the National Institutes of Health had canceled seven grants. These included $532,000 for “using a mouse to investigate effects of trans-sex treatment of testosterone” and $33,000 for “feminizing hormonal therapy in male rats.”
The agency stated that it is committed to “advancing the biomedical field under NIH priorities, and promoting radical openness in line with @POTUS’ agenda.”
It read: “Our efforts are driven by our responsibility to all Americans, as we advance in science and public healthcare.”
Recently, Republicans railed at the use of taxpayer money for animal research on transgender people.

Justin Goodman, of the White Coat Waste Project’s (WCW) watchdog group, said that the federal government had spent millions of dollars on “transgender testing”.
Goodman said that many of the cases involved mice, rats, and monkeys who were surgically mutilated, then given hormone therapy to simulate female-to-male or male-to-female gender transitions. They also looked at how taking vaccinations affected the animals after they had been transitioned from male to female or female to male, or the change in their genital size after estrogen or testosterone treatments to transition them.
DOGE announced that in addition to the grants canceled, a pilot project to audit federal departments for credit cards that are unused or unneeded has been expanded to include 16 additional agencies.

After two weeks, 146,000 cards have been deactivated.
A DOGE posting on X says: “As a refresher, the number of active accounts/cards at the beginning of the audit was 4.6M. There is still work to be done.”
Musk stated that many credit card limits issued by the government are as high as $10,000.
There are almost twice as many credit/purchasing cards as there are government employees, with a $10,000 limit! He said that there were “a lot of questionable expenditures” taking place.
