Costa Rican law enforcement officials have launched an intensive search for a woman suspected of killing a 74-year-old American citizen at a beachside condominium in late September.

The Judicial Investigation Agency, Costa Rica’s counterpart to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, has released surveillance footage and issued a public appeal for information regarding the suspect’s identity and whereabouts. The American victim, identified only by the surname Fleming, was discovered deceased on September 27 at a residential property in Playas del Coco, a popular tourist destination situated along the country’s northern Pacific coastline.

According to investigators, Fleming entered the condominium at approximately 4:50 in the afternoon on the day of his death. Surveillance cameras captured a woman entering the premises with him and later departing alone. Authorities subsequently found Fleming’s body inside the residence. Medical examiners determined that the victim sustained fatal head injuries consistent with blunt force trauma.

The suspect remains unidentified, though investigators have provided a detailed physical description based on security footage analysis. Officials describe her as having a fair complexion, slender physique, and black hair, standing approximately five feet three inches tall. At the time of the incident, she was wearing blue denim shorts, sandals, and a white undergarment with chain-like decorative elements.

Released surveillance video shows the woman walking along a street in the company of another female individual shortly after the approximate time of Fleming’s death. Authorities have not disclosed whether the second woman is considered a person of interest or merely an acquaintance who might assist in identifying the primary suspect.

Playas del Coco, located in Guanacaste province, represents one of Costa Rica’s most frequented tourist areas, drawing thousands of American visitors annually. The town’s proximity to major resorts and its reputation as a retirement destination for North Americans makes this incident particularly concerning for the expatriate community and tourism industry alike.

The Judicial Investigation Agency has emphasized the international nature of this investigation and expressed confidence that cooperation with American law enforcement agencies will prove instrumental in locating the suspect. Costa Rican officials have requested that anyone with information regarding the woman’s identity or current location contact local authorities immediately.

This case underscores the vulnerability that American citizens can face while traveling abroad, even in nations generally considered safe for tourism. While Costa Rica maintains relatively low violent crime rates compared to neighboring Central American countries, incidents targeting foreign nationals do occur with unfortunate regularity in tourist-heavy regions.

The investigation remains active, and authorities have not ruled out the possibility that the suspect may have already fled Costa Rica. International law enforcement agencies have been notified and are coordinating efforts to track potential border crossings and airline passenger manifests from the relevant time period.
