New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker, known for his extensive Senate speech earlier this year in which he criticized the Trump administration’s agenda, has announced his engagement to Alexis Lewis.

Booker, who once sought the Democratic nomination for president, shared the news on Instagram Tuesday with a series of five photos. In the images, both parties are seen donned in leis, posing on a beach, and evidently delighted with the occasion. It’s worth noting that Booker, 56, has not been previously married.

“I am savoring the soul-affirming wonder of everyday life with my partner, best friend, and now my fiancée,” Booker wrote on his social media platform. He expressed gratitude for the support received from many quarters and voiced excitement for the path ahead.

Booker’s personal life was brought into public view a few years ago when he was involved with actress Rosario Dawson. Earlier this year, according to reliable sources, Booker confirmed that he and Lewis share a residence in Washington.

Booker, who was first elected to the Senate in a special election in 2013 and subsequently reelected in 2014 and 2020, has a history of public service. Before his Senate tenure, Booker held the office of the mayor in Newark, New Jersey’s largest city.

Booker’s marathon speech on the Senate floor in April, lambasting President Donald Trump’s agenda, lasted more than 25 hours and thrust him back into the national spotlight. The senator from New Jersey, when questioned about possible presidential aspirations for 2028, maintained that his focus was on his Senate reelection in 2026, and allowed that the presidential race would “take care of itself.”
