Danielle Spencer, best known for her role as Dee Thomas in the 1970s sitcom “What’s Happening!!,” has passed away at the age of 60.

Spencer died on Monday after a prolonged battle with cancer. Her representative has confirmed this information. Spencer’s character, Dee, was known for her witty remarks and catchphrase, “Ooh, I’m gonna tell mama,” which became a hallmark of the show.

“What’s Happening!!” was among the first television programs to focus on the lives of Black teenagers. Set in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles, the show aired on ABC from 1976 to 1979. It was based on the film “Cooley High” and gained a lasting legacy due to its memorable characters.

We must mention that Spencer had her share of personal struggles. In 1977, at the age of 12, she was involved in a severe car accident on the Pacific Coast Highway. This incident left her in a coma for three weeks and resulted in long-term spinal and neurological issues requiring multiple surgeries.

She transitioned from acting to a career in veterinary medicine. According to reliable sources, Spencer obtained a doctorate in veterinary medicine from Tuskegee University in 1993, becoming an advocate for animal rights.

Spencer’s resilience extended beyond her acting career. In 2014, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, leading to a double mastectomy. Despite these challenges, she continued to make occasional appearances in the entertainment industry, including a role in the 1997 film “As Good as it Gets.”

Former co-star Haywood Nelson described Spencer as a “brilliant, loving, positive, pragmatic warrior,” highlighting her impact both on and off screen. Danielle Spencer will be greatly missed by her family, friends, and fans. We will keep them in our thoughts and prayers.
