Police say that at least 28 people were injured, including children, when a driver rammed into a crowd of people in Munich, Germany on Thursday. Initial reports suggest that some of the victims were seriously injured.

Markus Soder, the Bavarian Premier Minister, says that the crash will be treated as “a suspected attack.” BBC reported that the police identified the suspect as an Afghan asylum seeker aged 24. They also said he had been known to them for prior offenses.

Fox News Trey Yingst was at the scene and said he witnessed someone limping off the scene with paramedics.

Munich Police is asking witnesses for footage and other information about the incident.

Reuters reported that this incident took place just a little over a mile from where world leaders will gather for the Munich Security Conference on Friday. Vice President JDVance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy are expected to attend the conference.

According to a spokesperson for the vice president, Vance and Zelenskyy are expected to meet at the conference’s margins. The ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict is likely the main topic. According to the Associated Press, Secretary of State Marco Rubio will also attend the conference and participate in the meeting.

A European official stated that the U.S. had no plan to end the conflict, even though President Donald Trump made it clear that he wanted to do so, and urged both Russian President Vladimir Putin and President Zelenskyy to agree.

An official who was familiar with the peace negotiations said that it is “too early” for Munich to announce a peace plan for Ukraine. The negotiations between Trump, Zelenskyy, and Putin will be difficult. Trump will decide the best course of action. All options are on the table to stop the killing. There’s plenty of room for sanctions to be increased.”

The MSC annual conference was designed to bring together leaders from around the world to discuss conflict and possible solutions.

The MSC posted on its official X page that it was “deeply sorry to hear that a tragic event occurred this morning in Munich’s city center…Our thoughts are with those who were affected and their families.”

The MSC also urged residents to stay calm and obey police orders.
