A routine vehicle theft report in Pierce County, Washington, escalated into a perilous high-speed chase when suspects threw a chainsaw and other equipment at pursuing law enforcement officers on Interstate 5.

The incident began shortly before midnight on April 19 when a woman reported her vehicle stolen from an apartment complex in the Parkland area. Pierce County deputies responded swiftly to the call, and within minutes, a K-9 deputy located the stolen vehicle as the driver attempted to leave the scene.

When the deputy initiated a traffic stop, the driver refused to comply and instead accelerated away, beginning what would become a dangerous pursuit involving two suspects. The chase quickly moved onto Interstate 5 southbound, where dashboard camera footage and radio communications documented the unfolding situation.

During the early stages of the pursuit, deputies reported favorable conditions with minimal traffic ahead as the stolen vehicle reached speeds of approximately 70 miles per hour. However, the situation took a decidedly hazardous turn when the passenger began throwing objects from the moving vehicle.

“Just threw a chainsaw,” a deputy warned over the radio, alerting fellow officers to the dangerous projectiles being hurled onto the roadway. The deputy instructed other units to remain vigilant as the pursuit continued.

Investigators later confirmed that in addition to the chainsaw, the suspects threw rope and climbing gear onto the highway, creating serious hazards for the pursuing officers and any other motorists who might have encountered the debris. Law enforcement officials emphasized that these actions transformed an already dangerous situation into one that posed significant risks to public safety.

The chase proceeded off Interstate 5 toward Joint Base Lewis McChord, a major military installation in the region. As the suspects attempted to exit toward a logistics gate, their flight came to an abrupt end when the stolen vehicle became stuck near a roundabout.

Deputies were able to detain the suspects following the vehicle’s immobilization. The Pierce County Sheriff’s Office released video footage of the incident, which clearly shows the chaotic nature of the pursuit and the reckless behavior exhibited by the occupants of the stolen vehicle.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers face during high-speed pursuits. The decision to throw heavy tools and equipment at pursuing deputies represents not only a threat to officer safety but also demonstrates a callous disregard for other motorists who could have been injured by the debris scattered across the interstate.

The Pierce County Sheriff’s Office has not yet released the identities of the suspects or detailed the charges they will face. However, given the severity of their actions during the pursuit, they are likely to encounter multiple felony charges beyond the initial vehicle theft.
