Red Dye No. 3 has been banned by the FDA in both food and medication.
Red Dye No. Also known as Erythrosine is found in many foods. Foods such as frosting, candy, cookies, cupcakes, and frozen desserts are given a cherry red color.
The FDA announced the ban on the dye after more than 30 years of it being banned in cosmetics and topical medicines due to safety concerns.
“The FDA cannot authorize a food additive or color additive if it has been found to cause cancer in humans or animals,” Jim Jones, the FDA’s deputy director for human foods, said in a statement. “Evidence shows cancer in laboratory male rats exposed to high levels of FD&C Red No. 3.”

For many years, parents have believed that dyes are a cause of behavioral issues like ADHD or hyperactivity.
Asa Bradman, a professor and chair of the public health department at the University of California Merced, is a member of this team. He was a part of the California review.
Republicans welcomed this news and took a victory lap in support of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Trump’s nominee for Health and Human Services who stated that eliminating artificial colors from foods will be his top priority.
Kennedy has been annoying Democrats and their media lapdogs since he quit his presidential bid to join Donald Trump’s MAHA movement. MAHA aims to “dismantle the corporate stranglehold on our government agencies which has resulted in widespread chronic diseases and environmental degradation as well as rampant mistrust and widespread public distrust.”
Kennedy’s inclusion in Team Trump 2.0 triggered a great deal of criticism. The New York Times attempted to fact-check Kennedy’s claims about the Froot Loops ingredients.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will have his hands full at Health & Human Services. Just maybe, in the end, American diets will improve their health. For many years, Americans have been eating crappy food.
Red Dye no.3 must be eliminated from food products before January 20, 2027. Producers of ingested medicines have until January 20, 2028, to comply. Red Dye No.3 must be removed by January 20, 2027. The deadline for producers of ingested medications is January 20, 2028.
The FDA’s decision is in line with MAHA objectives and reflects both the increasing influence of the MAHA movement and Trump’s leadership. It comes weeks before Kennedy travels to Capitol Hill for his Senate confirmation hearing. The date of the hearing has yet to be set, but we’ll cover it fully.
