Anne Burrell, a celebrated chef and prominent figure in the culinary world, widely recognized as the co-host of Food Network’s “Worst Cooks in America”, has tragically passed away at the age of 55.
Reports from Brooklyn indicate that Ms. Burrell was discovered “unconscious and unresponsive” in her residence early Tuesday morning. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has announced that an autopsy will be conducted to ascertain the cause of her premature departure.
Her family, in a heartfelt statement, remembered Anne as “a beloved wife, sister, daughter, stepmother, and friend,” describing her warm and radiant spirit that touched countless lives. The Food Network also paid tribute, praising her exceptional culinary skills and her ability to spread the joy of food.

Anne Burrell was born in Cazenovia, New York, on September 21, 1969. She developed a passion for cooking at a young age, inspired by her mother’s home-cooked meals and the television icon, Julia Child.
After acquiring a degree in English and Communications from Canisius College, Burrell pursued her culinary education at the Culinary Institute of America, graduating in 1996. Further specializing in Italian cuisine, she studied at the Italian Culinary Institute for Foreigners, following which she undertook several apprenticeships in Italy.
Upon her return to the U.S., Burrell served as a sous chef at Felidia in Manhattan and subsequently led the kitchen at Savoy in SoHo. After a distinguished tenure in the restaurant industry, she transitioned to teaching at the Institute of Culinary Education for more than three years. Her television career began as a sous chef on “Iron Chef America,” eventually leading to her Emmy-nominated show, “Secrets of a Restaurant Chef.”
This development follows earlier reports that Burrell became a staple on the Food Network, featuring in shows such as “Chopped,” “Chef Wanted,” “Food Network Star,” and most recently competing in “House of Knives” in 2025. She also authored two cookbooks, including the New York Times bestseller “Cook Like a Rock Star.”
Burrell is survived by her husband, Stuart Claxton, his son Javier, her mother Marlene, her sister Jane and Jane’s children Isabella, Amelia, and Nicolas, and her brother Ben.
Her passing leaves a significant void in the culinary world, a world that she influenced with her talent, passion, and love for cooking.
