Danny Danon, the Israeli ambassador to the United Nations, has voiced a sharp criticism of the forces within the U.N. Security Council, accusing them of ‘facilitating terrorism’.
This development follows earlier reports of a brutal terror attack that took two lives at the Israeli embassy in Washington. Danon declared that the Security Council’s meeting to censure Israel, while the incident is still fresh, amounts to a ‘moral disgrace’. He argued that the council is not condemning terrorism, but rather serving the interests of those who perpetrate it.
Algeria has circulated a draft resolution, critical of Israel, within a day of the aforementioned attack. The Security Council is expected to vote on the resolution on May 28. Danon has taken issue with this draft, stating it demands the lifting of restrictions on the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza, the release of prisoners, and a full withdrawal from Gaza, all the while ignoring the role of Hamas or the terror attacks against Israel on Oct. 7, 2023.

The evidence suggests a complex situation. The draft resolution, as viewed by Jewish News Syndicate, expresses ‘grave concern over the catastrophic humanitarian situation and the latest developments in the Gaza Strip following the breach of the ceasefire agreement.’ It calls for a permanent end to hostilities, a return of any deceased hostages’ remains to their families, an exchange of Palestinian prisoners, and a complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza. It also proposes a substantial multi-year reconstruction plan for Gaza.
Furthermore, the draft demands ‘the immediate and unconditional lifting of all restrictions on the access of humanitarian aid into and its distribution throughout the Gaza Strip, as well as the restoration of electricity, water supply and other essential services.’
This raises important questions about the future of Israeli-UN relations and the path towards resolving the complex situation in Gaza.
