Multiple people were killed and others wounded in a shooting near a California beach early Monday morning, according to authorities in Monterey County.

The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies and detectives responded to reports of gunfire along Jetty Road in Moss Landing shortly after midnight. In a press release issued Monday, the department confirmed “multiple fatalities and casualties” but declined to provide specific numbers as the investigation remains active.

North County Fire Protection Chief Jess Cortez stated that emergency crews discovered two individuals suffering from gunshot wounds to the chest, along with another person sustaining minor injuries. The two victims with chest wounds were pronounced dead at the scene. Medical personnel transported the third injured party to a local hospital for treatment.

As of this report, authorities have not disclosed the total number of casualties nor have they provided information regarding what precipitated the violence. The sheriff’s office has characterized this as an active investigation and indicated that additional details will not be released at this time.

In response to the incident, California State Parks Police closed both Jetty Road and Moss Landing State Beach at the sheriff’s office’s request. The closures remained in effect as investigators continued processing the scene and gathering evidence.

Despite the serious nature of the incident, the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office issued a statement assuring residents that “there is no active threat to the Moss Landing Community at this time.”

Moss Landing, a small coastal community located approximately 20 miles north of Monterey, is known primarily for its harbor and marine research facilities. The area typically experiences minimal violent crime, making Monday’s shooting particularly notable for the tight-knit community.

The investigation continues as authorities work to piece together the circumstances surrounding the shooting. No arrests have been announced, and officials have not indicated whether suspects have been identified.

This incident adds to a troubling pattern of violence in coastal California communities, where law enforcement agencies have grappled with maintaining public safety in popular beach areas that attract both residents and visitors.

The sheriff’s office has not provided a timeline for when additional information might be released to the public. Officials are expected to hold a press briefing once investigators have made sufficient progress in their inquiry.

Anyone with information regarding the shooting has been encouraged to contact the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office.
