The Philadelphia Eagles suffered their sixth consecutive defeat on Sunday night, surrendering 27 unanswered points in a 27-10 loss to the Washington Commanders. What began as a promising outing deteriorated into another dispiriting chapter for a franchise now mired at 2-6.

Philadelphia opened with purpose. Kicker Jake Elliott connected from 40 yards, and running back Saquon Barkley punched in a three-yard touchdown following a Washington turnover. The Eagles held a 10-0 advantage and appeared poised to halt their losing streak.

That early momentum proved fleeting.

Washington quarterback Jayden Daniels orchestrated a methodical comeback, while kicker Drew Stevens proved reliable from distance. Stevens converted a 56-yard field goal late in the opening quarter, then added a 39-yarder before halftime. Between those kicks, Daniels connected with receiver Stefon Diggs for an eight-yard touchdown, giving Washington a 13-10 halftime lead.

The absence of quarterback Jalen Hurts, who will reportedly miss the remainder of the season after blood clots were discovered in his lungs, has exposed Philadelphia’s vulnerabilities. Backup Tanner McKee struggled throughout, displaying the hesitancy and inexperience one expects from an understudy thrust into a starting role. He held the ball too long, absorbed unnecessary sacks, avoided throwing downfield, and committed two turnovers that proved costly.

Washington’s defensive strategy was straightforward and effective. They stacked the box against Barkley, limiting the All-Pro running back to a mere 30 yards on 13 carries. Without a passing threat to keep defenders honest, Philadelphia’s offense ground to a halt.

The decisive sequence came in the third quarter. Defensive end Dorance Armstrong strip-sacked McKee, and Charles Omenihu recovered the fumble for Washington. On the very next play, Daniels found Treylon Burks for 53 yards downfield, setting up a 25-yard Stevens field goal that extended the lead to 16-10.

Philadelphia’s frustrations mounted in the fourth quarter when self-inflicted wounds eliminated their best scoring opportunity. Elliott appeared to convert a 36-yard field goal that would have cut the deficit to three points, but an illegal formation penalty on left tackle Jordan Mailata negated the kick. Pushed back five yards, Elliott missed the retry wide right.

Washington seized control from there. Stevens added a 42-yard field goal with 3:43 remaining. When Philadelphia got the ball back, cornerback Rasul Douglas intercepted McKee. Running back Rachaad White then broke free for 33 yards before scoring from a yard out with 1:52 left. Austin Ekeler converted a two-point conversion to establish the final margin.

Daniels finished with 217 passing yards, one touchdown, and no turnovers in a composed performance. Washington improved its record while Philadelphia continues to search for answers in what has become a lost season.
