A deadly shooting at a Halloween retail store in Fairfield, California, has left one person dead and six others wounded in what authorities are calling a targeted attack.

The incident occurred late Friday evening at Spirit Halloween, a seasonal costume and decoration shop located within the Solano Town Center shopping mall. According to the Fairfield Police Department, gunfire erupted inside the store as shoppers prepared for the Halloween weekend.

All seven victims sustained gunshot wounds, police confirmed in a statement released shortly after midnight on Saturday. The deceased victim’s identity remains unknown as investigators work to notify next of kin. The six surviving victims were transported to area hospitals, with at least three reported to be in critical condition as of Saturday morning.

Based on preliminary investigation, authorities believe this was not a random act of violence. Police characterized the shooting as a targeted incident involving a single suspect who was inside the store at the time of the attack. However, investigators have declined to release additional details about the nature of the targeting or potential motives, citing the ongoing investigation.

“This is still a very active crime scene,” the police statement read. “Detectives are speaking with witnesses and diligently working to identify the suspect responsible for this horrific shooting.”

As of Saturday morning, no arrests had been announced, and police continued to process the crime scene and interview witnesses who were present during the attack. The shopping center, located approximately 37 miles northeast of Sacramento, remained closed as investigators gathered evidence.

The timing of the shooting, occurring on the eve of one of the retail calendar’s busiest Halloween weekends, adds another tragic chapter to concerns about public safety in commercial spaces. Spirit Halloween stores typically see heavy foot traffic in the final days leading up to October 31st, as last-minute shoppers seek costumes and decorations.

In a troubling coincidence, a separate shooting occurred at another Spirit Halloween location on the same evening. Police in Madison Heights, Michigan, reported gunfire between two 21-year-old males inside their local Spirit Halloween store late Friday afternoon. That incident resulted in one death, with the alleged shooter hospitalized and in police custody.

While authorities have not indicated any connection between the two incidents, the occurrence of shootings at the same retail chain on the same day raises questions about store security protocols during peak shopping periods.

The Fairfield Police Department has asked anyone with information about the California shooting to come forward as detectives work to identify and apprehend the suspect.

This investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have promised to release additional information as it becomes available without compromising the integrity of their work.
